Schwa /ə/ is a short, relaxed vowel that appears in many unstressed English syllables. It is often called the most common vowel sound in English because it helps speech move between stronger beats. You can hear it at the beginning of about, in the middle of comfortable, and at the end of pronunciation. It is not tied to one written vowel: a, e, i, o, and u can all represent schwa in different words.
