An English IPA chart is useful when it helps you hear a sound, not when it becomes a wall of symbols to memorize. IPA, the International Phonetic Alphabet, gives a consistent way to show pronunciation. English spelling cannot always do that: through, though, thought, and thorough begin with the same letters but do not share one vowel pattern.

Use pairs when possible. ship /ʃɪp/ and chip /tʃɪp/ differ at the beginning. thin /θɪn/ and then /ðen/ contrast voicing. full /fʊl/ and fool /fuːl/ show a vowel length and quality difference. Minimal pairs make your ear notice a small change that spelling often hides.

Vowels need patience

English has more vowel distinctions than the five written vowel letters suggest. A is not one sound; compare cat, father, and about. O is not one sound; compare go, book, and thought. The chart can show the symbols, but audio is what teaches the category.

Different dictionaries can make small transcription choices, especially for American /r/, vowel length, or syllable boundaries. This is normal. Follow one reputable accent model for a task, and use audio to settle questions that symbols alone cannot answer.

A beginner routine

Choose three words. Listen to each one at normal speed, identify one unfamiliar symbol, read the mouth note, and repeat the word slowly. Then say one natural sentence. Check yourself by listening again rather than by staring at the chart. Add only a few sounds each week.
